Abstract

Looks at variations in price changes for goods and services and the relative proportionsconsumers spend on themThe Office for National Statistics collectsa large number of prices every month toproduce the retail prices index (RPI). Someperceive that consumer inflation is higherthan the official measure. This article looksat the variations in price change for goodsand services and the relative proportionsconsumers spend on them and suggestswhy some people think inflation is higher.Households with different levels ofincome have different spending patterns,and these spending patterns affect eachhousehold’s experience of inflation. Forexample, households with the lowest levelof income spend a greater proportion onfood whereas households with higherincome spend more on petrol.
