Gender and Nutrition in Nepal: Experiences from the field

Author

Listed:
  • Aruna Uprety

Abstract

This article is based on Aruna Uprety’s direct experiences from the villages of Nepal where many women are malnourished because of gender discrimination and harmful cultural practices. Children are also malnourished because their parents do not have knowledge about the value of local food. In addition, health workers are not trained to provide information to the community on health and nutrition. There are many nutritious local foods available in the villages but those foods are not used properly and instead people think that packaged foods from the markets are healthier. The author is spreading information on the nutritional value of local food by writing books and articles and through workshops on nutrition and health.
