Non-Communicable Diseases: Is big business hijacking the debate?

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have been promoted as a global health priority for the past decade. This article explores the various issues regarding what has been called the ‘epidemic of NCD diseases’. It examines the evidence regarding various claims about increase in NCD incidence as well as regarding the causal factors driving the rise of NCDs. It also discusses the role of various actors in the current attempt to project NCDs as a priority issue, including in Low and Middle Income Countries. Finally it take a critical look at the strategies being promoted to tackle NCDs.
