Education, Financing and Making Good Broken Promises

Author

Listed:
  • Graça Machel

Abstract

Graça Machel asks why the pledges made at international conferences to ensure education is a priority for development have not been met. She points to the tens of millions of primary school-age children across the world who are not yet in school and the critical shortages of trained teachers and physical infrastructure to help achieve even the goal of primary education for all children. She gives her vision for sustainable development founded on three strands of education as a right and life-saving measure based on knowledge, skills and values of equality, equity, and respect for everyone.
