Abstract

Robyn Slarke,1 activist and film-maker, shares her work with women's rights in Papua New Guinea. Her friend and partner in the struggle has been Janet Koriama President of the Hela Council of Women and the Mt Kare Landowners' Association. For Robyn it was the first time in 20 years she had travelled anywhere other than the familiar route between Papua New Guinea and Australia. At the Forum they spoke about how women from the Highlands are now standing as candidates in unprecedented numbers and calling for free and fair elections. The warm reception at the courage shown by women in Papua New Guinea and the excitement which greeted Robyn's film ‘It is not an Easy Road’, illustrates how the AWID Forum supports change for women too often forgotten on the margins of the mainstream.
