Abstract

Wolfgang Sachs, in his capacity as co-ordinator and editor of a group of 15 people that produced ‘The Johannesburg Memo: Fairness in a Fragile World’, reflects on what has to be radically different in Johannesburg if it is to catch up with the ecological disasters we are facing 10 years on (see www.joburgmemo.org for the full text). This article draws largely on part 2 of that document, ‘The Johannesburg Agenda’, which recommends a southern-led, people- and poverty-centred agenda with a move to sustainable livelihoods in a post-fossil fuel age. Development (2002) 45, 12–17. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1110371
