Child Labour: A different perspective

Abstract

Pradeep Mehta argues that one contentious issue which often tends to skew the debate in the new world trade order is about linking labour standards to trade. The protagonists feel that the labour standards which prevail in the poor world can only be improved through sanctions. On the other hand, the antagonists feel that this is merely a ruse to deprive them of the comparative advantage that they enjoy in terms of low labour costs. He argues that rather than emotive responses a proper understanding of child labour is required. Development (2000) 43, 40–42. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1110146
