Integrating the transition economies into the EU framework - an overview

Abstract

From the moment the transitions in the eastern part of Europe erupted, the European scene has been surprisingly convoluted. The opportunities for remaking the continent as a whole offered by the “revolutions” in its eastern part have rarely been as promising. At the same time, resistance to seizing these unique chances has been pronounced. In many respects, ejforts to build upon the certainties of European integration and cohesion while jumping the hurdles of history and politics have foundered. It is important to gain a solid grasp of the reasons behind these paradoxical emanations of the quasi-unique chances forgone and the frustrations incurred in the process.
