La poliomielitis y el «surgimiento» de la rehabilitación en Argentina. Un análisis sociohistórico

Abstract

El propósito de este artículo es analizar ideas, definiciones y prácticas vinculadas al «surgimiento» de la rehabilitación en la Argentina, a mediados del siglo XX. A partir de fuentes primarias, se analizan las concepciones sobre el problema médico y social de la rehabilitación del «lisiado» y su presencia en la agenda pública entre 1940 y 1960. Los resultados muestran que las epidemias de poliomielitis fueron un factor significativo que tensionó los alcances y contenidos de la protección social de las personas con discapacidad y de los proyectos de modernización de la rehabilitación, al tiempo que conformó las bases de posteriores desarrollos en dicho campo.
