Comercio, manufactura y servicios en Arequipa a inicios de la República

Abstract

El artículo analiza el impacto provocado por los cambios en las políticas comerciales nacionales en los sectores comercio, manufactura y servicios arequipeños a inicios de la República. Luego de la Independencia, el proteccionismo económico se impuso en las primeras décadas por acción de hacendados norteños y empresarios mineros, quienes, recelosos de la competencia de productos ingleses, franceses y estadounidenses, prefirieron proteger el mercado interno con elevados aranceles. Por el contrario, a los comerciantes y hacendados del sur les convenía la aplicación de políticas comerciales liberales para reconstruir el antiguo mercado virreinal con Bolivia y para exportar lanas a Inglaterra. La apertura del mercado solo se logró de 1836 a 1839 en los años de la Confederación Peruano-Boliviana. Finalmente, la apertura de la economía peruana llegó solo a mediados de 1840 en la proverbial era del guano.
