El boom del oro en Madre de Dios: continuidad y vigencia de la economía extractivo-mercantil

Abstract

A partir de 1973 se han producido en la región de Madre de Dios una serie de transformaciones en todos los niveles como consecuencia de la intensa explotación aurífera iniciada. Este "boom"aurífero implica el nuevo apogeo de la economía extractivo-mercantil que ha estado presente en la región desde la época del auge del caucho, aunque con ciertas intermitencias. En la actualidad la minería aurífera es la principal actividad económica en el departamento, pero su crecimiento ha afectadoa otras actividades, principalmente a la agricultura, lo que tiene un efecto contraproducente en el proceso de desarrollo regional. En este artículo se estudian específicamente las consecuencias económicas de las transformaciones ocasionadas por el "boom"del oro.
