Abstract

This paper studies pro-poor growth in Senegal using the first and second Senegalese Household Surveys (ESAM I and ESAM II) and the Survey of Poverty Monitoring in Senegal (ESPS). The analysis was carried out using four tools for measuring pro-poor growth: the incidence of growth curve, the rate of pro-poor growth, the index of pro-poor growth and growth rate equivalent to poverty. We find that growth was absolute pro-poor and not relative pro-poor in Senegal from 1994 to 2005, i.e., a pro-poor growth accompanied by increased inequality. Our results are robust to the use of the four tools considered.
