Abstract

This paper presents a basic profile and analysis of the correlates of poverty in the Central African Republic using data from the Central African survey for the monitoring and evaluation of well-being conducted in 2008 by the Central African Institute of Statistics and Economic and Social Studies. The estimates of poverty are obtained following the cost of basic needs methodology. Poverty affects almost two thirds of the population, particularly in rural areas. Among the most affected subgroups are farmers and households whose head has a low level of education, and household with many members. The regions least affected are those of the capital Bangui and Ecuador.
