Abstract

The demand for mountain tourist destinations represents an important segment of the tourist demand in Romania. It recorded an oscillating evolution during the last three decades (1990- 2019), the causes being complex, of economic, social and political nature. The significant increase of tourism demand in recent times is the effect of implementing coherent action plans, coordinated at the national level and supported by certain government measures to encourage the tourism industry. These involved both investments in tourism infrastructure and in the marketing and promotion of Romanian destinations. At the same time, tourism operators have understood that a diversified, tourist-oriented offer that meets tourists’ specific needs is the only way to cope with competition on the regional tourism market and many of them have acted in this direction. The further development of the tourist access infrastructure and facilities in the areas with high tourist potential, as well as the rehabilitation of some tourist attractions represent the strategic directions of action in order to continue this favorable trend.
