Abstract

In a market economy, the chambers of commerce represent an important component of the external environment of any company, due to their assumed role in supporting and stimulating the whole economic activity in the regional, national and international area. Concerns for setting up institutions that defend the interests of merchants, of guilds, existed in the economic developed countries many centuries ago, and in 1599 was founded the world's first Chamber of Commerce, in Marseille. In this article, we intend to present a brief overview of the history of the general evolution of this institution, in Romania, but we will focus our study on the example of Constanta Chamber of Commerce. We consider that, through the activities it performs (locally, nationally and internationally), this organization brings an important contribution to the development of the business environment.
