Current account deficit and financial instability in the emerging countries in the European Union

Abstract

There is a strong link between current account deficit and financial instability. This paper aims to study this relationship, taking into consideration the following: the short and long-term developments in the current account; the factors that determine the cyclical developments in the current account balance; the finance of the current account deficits; the connectivity between the current account and financial instability, given by the longterm sustainability of the current account deficit.
