Issues Affecting New State Extension Specialists: Strategies for the 1990's

Abstract

This article addresses: (1) the level of graduate school preparation currently received for extension positions; (2) current issues confronting new extension specialists; and (3) strategic recommendations for developing successful extension programs for assistant professors during the volatile 1990's. The results of a national survey of department chairpersons, tenured state extension specialists, and non-tenured state extension specialists in agricultural economics departments are presented. Survey respondents generally agreed that current Ph.D. programs are deficient in preparing graduates for extension responsibilities and that an evolving extension environment presents new obstacles and opportunities for the new specialist, but that strategies exist for new specialists to serve the interests of their clientele as well as their own interests. Differences across regions and appointments are noted.
