Abstract

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has been in existence in various incarnations, as an intergovernmental organization for well over 100 years, its origins going back to the conclusion of the Paris Convention for the Protection of the Industrial Property in 1883. WIPO, which has 171 Member States, provides a range of services aimed at facilitating or strengthening the protection of intellectual property at the international level. The newest addition to its activities is the provision of services for the resolution of international intellectual property disputes. Those services are provided by the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, which commenced operations in October 1994. Copyright 1999 by Oxford University Press.
