Toward a zero-carbon building future: innovations and challenges for sustainable development in China

Abstract

Zero-carbon buildings (ZCBs) are a key means to cope with extreme weather caused by greenhouse gases and to realize sustainable development in the building sector. Based on the necessity and urgency of ZCBs, this paper explores the development prospects of sustainable ZCBs in China, taking into account the current state of research on ZCB design, materials, operation and maintenance, and intelligent systems, in order to implement the concept of “dual-carbon” development. It focuses on three questions: (1) How to integrate innovative ZCB technologies with existing buildings; (2) How to utilize policies to promote the development of ZCBs in China; and (3) How to address the technological and social challenges of realizing ZCBs in China. Finally, six recommendations are given in relation to the current situation in China, aiming to provide some reference for the development of the ZCB sector in China.
