Abstract

The relationship between Piero Sraffa and Antonio Gramsci was complex and deep and included involvement in the activity of the Italian Communist Party. This note is focused on two particular aspects of Sraffa's activity aimed at helping Gramsci during the years of the latter's detention. First, it considers the way Sraffa was involved in the structure of the Italian Communist Party at the time when he volunteered to cooperate in its efforts in support of Gramsci. Second, it considers a particular episode, which offers an insight into the relationship that Sraffa had with foreign-based members of that party and suggests he may either have had a role in the management of the party's funds or could have had ready access to information concerning those funds.
