Kornai and the Vanguard Mode of Production

Author

Listed:
  • Lebowitz, Michael A

Abstract

In introducing the political power structure into its appropriate place in his theoretical analysis of "actually existing socialism" (AES), Janos Kornai's The Socialist System (1992) was not only a "comprehensive synthesis" of his earlier path-breaking studies but also qualitatively transformed that analysis. This article explores Kornai's presentation of AES as an organic system whose "genetic program" is the vanguard party in power, develops on this basis the concepts of vanguard relations of production and the "specifically vanguard mode of production", and considers the validity of inferences drawn from the experience of AES.
