The Cuban Economy: Rectification in a Changing World: Commentary

Author

Listed:
  • Perez-Lopez, Jorge F

Abstract

Since 1986, Cuba has been engaged in a process of "rectification" of its economic system that has enhanced centralization and all but eliminated incipient forms of markets that had been introduced in the 1980s. Economic performance during this period has been unsatisfactory. Drastic changes in the trading relationships with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe contributed to the poor performance and present serious challenges for the island's economic development in the 1990s.
