Abstract

This paper studies the role of Professor Lord Kaldor as a policy advisor to the United Kingdom, and other governments, over the period 1939 to his death in 1986. Separate sections deal with his war-time advice, 1939-45; his work on postwar reconstruction, 1946-49; his spells as economic adviser to two Labour governments, 1964-69 and 1974-76; his work for the Royal Commission on the Taxation of Profits and Income, 1951-55, and his tax advice to many developing countries; and his advice to international institutions on the working of the international monetary system and his evidence to various government Select Committees in the United Kingdom.
