Abstract

The growth of the food chains and the adoption of centralized milk programs, including the use of private-label brands and their own processing facilities, has improved the bargaining position of food chains relative to fluid milk processors. Food retailer groups and milk processors were surveyed to determine the impact of changes in the retailing industry on the fluid milk processing industry. This article provides substantial groundwork for more detailed analysis of the performance aspects of both the food retailing and fluid milk processing industries that have resulted from the increasing vertical integration on the part of food retailers.
