Abstract

Life expectancy rises and also life quality. Therefore old people have more time on their hands. This gives options to create new life plans. The Seventh Report on the Elderly points out the responsibility of the municipal communities so that elderly have a good life in old age. Social participation is fundamentally for an independent and self-determined living. Empirical data show that elderly want to engage themselves. Two examples show a positive outcome for people, when involved in cooperatives. Furthermore there are positive external effects for the social environment.
