Ungleiche Zwillinge: Gewerkschafter in der SPD

Abstract

German unions and the Social-Democratic Party (SPD) share a long common history. During all those years, however, conflict has occurred on several occasions with the dispute on the labour market reforms under the chancellorship of Gerhard Schröder being the most recent and probably most conflictual example. As the statistical analysis presented in the article reveals, union membership is still high within the ranks of SPD-activists. As data also indicates, however, SPD activists who carry a union card in addition to their party membership are much different from party members without union affiliation in terms of their age, education, but also their workplace activities. In addition, union members within the party share different views on the development of the German welfare state when compared to non-union members. As the analysis also reveals, it is not just union membership as such which is making a difference in terms of party members’ perceptions but also the sequence by which membership in both organisations has been established.
