Abstract

The collectively agreed pay levels of employees with vocational training and college qualifications vary greatly according to sector. This applies to the pay level of new entrants as well as for achievable pay in the career development. The comparative analysis of wage developments in west Germany according to sectors shows that currently in the metal industry as a core industrial sector in with a predominantly male workforce as well as in the financial service sector with its mixed gender workforce, significantly higher wage rates can be achieved than in the female-dominated health and social sector with its public or quasi-public employment. This difference has increased over time.
