Abstract

(One of welfare economists’ leading tasks is to ethically justify free markets and associated liberal economic policies. In my paper I am criticizing a specific element of this justification, the so-called “welfare economic actualism”. As will be clarified, welfare economic actualism is a position concerning the appropriate role of want formation in welfare economic thinking. After making a short case for the general interest of my approach, actualism is being analyzed and its merits discussed. My main target is strong actualism, the thesis that welfare economists should dispense with information concerning want formation when justifying their liberal policies. I am going to argue that strong actualism completely fails due to welfare theoretic and antipaternalist considerations.)
