Abstract

(Amartya Sen combines economic inquiries with philosophical insights more than anyone since the works of Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill. Nonetheless, his work is neither discussed systematically in business ethics, nor in the relatively theory-driven business ethics of the German speaking community. However, in this paper, I argue that his work can be quite fruitful for business ethics. This is not only true for his normative economics, but also for his work on questions of justice, human development and social choice. Especially, his non-ideal theory of justice, his wide understanding of rationality and his capability approach – if understood correctly – can be very productive for future theoretical developments in the field of business ethics.)
