From New Trade Theory to New Economic Geography: A Space Odyssey

Abstract

L’article étudie la Nouvelle Géographie économique (NEG) comme un développement de la Nouvelle Théorie du commerce international (NTCI). L’accent est mis sur les contributions et réflexions de Paul Krugman qui est l’initiateur à la fois de la NTCI et de la NEG. Son approche, connue sous l’expression de « Programme du MIT », combine l’impératif de Samuelson d’un modèle minimaliste d’optimisation sous contrainte avec les propres règles de Krugman de construction de modèles très novateurs. L’article met en regard les réalisations de la NEG et les exigences du programme du MIT. Nous soutenons l’idée que le développement de la théorie du commerce vers l’économie géographique a élargi le spectre d’analyse de l’interaction économique entre différents pays (ou régions), mais que la NEG doit encore progresser dans l’exploration du rôle de l’espace. Jusqu’à maintenant, les coûts de transport ont été introduits de façon ad hoc , mais il existe des tentatives pour les endogénéiser en termes de prix de services commerciaux.
