La rivalité commerciale franco-anglaise dans l’empire espagnol, 1713-1789

Abstract

De la paix d’Utrecht à la Révolution, l’empire colonial espagnol a représenté un enjeu considérable pour les économies française et britannique, à la fois comme débouché commercial et comme source de métaux précieux. Cet article envisage, sous l’angle exclusif des exportations, les résultats obtenus par les deux nations dans l’empire espagnol, en offrant une vue d’ensemble de la question : nature et valeur des cargaisons ; organisation et évolution des routes directes et indirectes, des circuits légaux et illégaux. Il montre que la France a conservé l’avantage jusqu’à la fin de la période, malgré les efforts britanniques pour s’assurer ce débouché et les difficultés dressées par une Espagne jalouse de son exclusif colonial.
