La balance et le trébuchet : enjeux et perspectives de l’étude économique et financière du parlement de Paris dans le renouvellement de son historiographie

    L’historiographie a conféré au parlement de Paris un rôle politique de premier plan, souvent en faisant l’économie de l’étude des sources. Il convient de se détacher de l’obsession du politique, en analysant d’abord son fonctionnement financier. Il est alors nécessaire d’utiliser les archives du Parlement, la série X des Archives nationales, mais surtout d’autres sources complémentaires, comme la collection Joly de Fleury de la Bibliothèque nationale, qui permettent de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement financier du Parlement. Les conclusions d’une étude financière du Parlement donnent un nouvel éclairage sur le rôle et l’action du parlement au XVIII e siècle : loin d’être un trublion politique, il fut avant tout une institution en crise, chargée de responsabilités qu’elle n’eut jamais les moyens financiers d’exercer.
