Un dimanche à Genève. Enjeux religieux et sociaux de la lutte pour un dimanche Chrétien

    Malgré la tradition calviniste, le dimanche à Genève au XIX e siècle voit coexister une grande diversité d’activités humaines. Les autorités civiles et ecclésiastiques tentent bien d’imposer le respect du jour du Seigneur mais ne peuvent empêcher que la législation de la Restauration ne tombe peu à peu en désuétude. Au milieu du siècle, une prise de conscience se produit au sein du milieu évangélique ; elle provoque en 1861 la fondation de la Société pour la sanctification du dimanche qui s’élève en 1876 au rang de fédération internationale. Loin de se limiter à un idéal religieux, ce mouvement associatif se bat pour garantir à tous un repos dominical. Cet article analyse la situation à Genève durant le dernier quart du XIX e siècle. Après les premières victoires législatives, le conflit autour du dimanche s’avive devant les résistances rencontrées dans le secteur du commerce, ainsi qu’en raison des débats sur l’emploi du temps libéré. L’avènement des loisirs oblige aussi l’Église à renouveler son discours sur le jour du Seigneur devant le risque d’érosion de la pratique religieuse.
