Le repos du dimanche : un exemple de lobbying catholique en France au milieu du XIXe siècle

Abstract

Les catholiques français sont particulièrement sensibles à la question de la violation du repos dominical au milieu du XIX e siècle. Alors que la France de Juillet, marquée par une forte industrialisation et un régime politique libéral, s’est peu souciée de législation sociale, la Seconde République a semblé inaugurer une époque plus favorable aux revendications dominicales. La voie administrative l’emporte cependant sur la solution législative et oblige les catholiques à explorer d’autres formes de lobbying . À l’initiative du député Albert d’Olivier, l’Œuvre du repos des dimanches et fêtes est fondée à Paris en 1853. Elle connaît quelques succès sous le Second Empire sans que les résultats paraissent à la hauteur des espérances. Née dans les milieux charitables de la noblesse du faubourg Saint-Germain, elle constitue un bon observatoire du catholicisme intransigeant dans sa dimension apocalyptique et ses implications sociales.
