Nanoscale scanning probe ferromagnetic resonance imaging using localized modes

Abstract

Magnetic imaging Rapid advances in nanomagnetics research have brought powerful applications in magnetic sensing and magnetic memory technologies. However, so far no high-resolution magnetic-imaging tool is available to characterize these complex nanoscale structures. A team at Ohio State University has now developed a scanning probe technique for the job, called ferromagnetic resonance imaging. Normally, studies based on ferromagnetic resonance provide only spectroscopic information and lack imaging capabilities as the ferromagnetic resonance mode is extended over the sample. The new method uses the intense, spatially confined magnetic field of a micromagnetic probe to localize the ferromagnetic resonance mode immediately beneath the probe. This makes it possible to image magnetic features to a resolution of 200 nanometres — even when they are buried beneath the surface of the nanostructure.
