Abstract

Mantle flow: convection at mobile belts Claudio Faccenna and Thorsten Becker compute global mantle flow based on a recent, high-resolution seismic tomography model, to investigate the role of buoyancy-driven and plate-motion-induced mantle circulation for the Mediterranean. They show that mantle flow provides an explanation for much of the observed dynamic topography and microplate motion in the region and conclude that vigorous small-scale convection in the uppermost mantle may also hold the key for understanding other complex mobile belts, such as those in the North American Cordillera and the Himalayan–Tibetan collision zone.
