Abstract

Quantum chaology is tops Chaos can be found in systems ranging from the simple to complex. It is found in the energy levels of atoms, electron transport, chemical reactions, neural networks, population dynamics, weather systems and the motion of planetary bodies. Almost everywhere in fact, but chaos appears fundamentally at odds with quantum mechanics, and physicists have long sought quantum signatures of classical chaos. Now an experimental realization of a standby for modellers of quantum chaos — the kicked top — provides an atomic system that can be used to study quantum chaology, observing quantum phase space dynamics that have a chaotic classical counterpart. Built around supercooled caesium atoms receiving a magnetic 'kick' that disrupts their electronic and nuclear spin, the system shows signatures of chaos that include sensitivity to perturbation and evidence for dynamical entanglement.
