The dawn of the particle astronomy era in ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

Abstract

The matter of astronomy Astronomers have colonized virtually every available slot on the electromagnetic spectrum: radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma-ray astronomies each give a different view of the Universe. Now a new observational window is opening up: particle astronomy. This emerging field makes use of a new generation of detector to analyse cosmic rays, streams of charged particles arriving from space. Of particular interest are those particles with energies above 1019 electron volts, since the physical processes that could create or accelerate such particles are at the limit of our present knowledge. In a Review Article, Pablo Bauleo and Julio Rodríguez Martino discuss the development of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray physics over the past 15 years, and anticipate the discoveries that will be made in the particle astronomy era.
