Abstract

Scaling down Many diverse dissimilar systems in nature exhibit surprisingly similar behaviours at the level of scaling laws — from earthquakes and stock markets to the inflating lung and vortices in superconductors. This universality is predicted to depend only on system dimensions, irrespective of microscopic details. Experimental verification of this principle is very rare, especially for one-dimensional systems. But Kab-Jin Kim et al. now demonstrate that in ferromagnetic nanowires, the dynamics of the magnetic domain wall are universal even when the system changes from a two- to a one-dimensional regime. One-dimensional critical behaviour was observed in wire structures narrower than a few hundred nanometres, corresponding to the scale of modern nanodevices.
