Abstract

Biofuel genomics: the woody alternative The first wave of biofuels has had a significant impact on world energy markets. But there are major concerns about the knock-on effects on food prices. Hence a growing interest in 'cellulosic' feedstocks, such as microbes, grasses, wood and crop residues, as a source of biomass for 'greener' biofuels that do not remove land from food production. If the potential of cellulosic biofuels is to be realized, new technologies for their efficient large-scale production will be required. With that in mind, Edward Rubin reviews recent work on the genomics of the potential sources of cellulosic biofuels.
