Abstract

Plant stem cells: A question of auxin/cytokinin balance It has been known for 50 years that the interplay between the plant hormones auxin and cytokinin is critical for shoot and root regeneration from cultured plant tissues, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remained obscure. Auxin was later found responsible for root stem-cell specification from the plant stem-cell pools established during embryogenesis. Bruno Müller and Jen Sheen now demonstrate that cytokinin is expressed during early embryogenesis, and that an interplay between auxin and cytokinin signalling pathways is critical for specifying the first root stem-cell niche.
