Abstract

On-chip quantum optics Microwaves are already exploited in conventional communication technologies, from long-distance broadcasts to short-distance signals within a computer chip. But they may also be used in a quantum computer for communication between distant quantum bits (qubits). An efficient on-chip, on-demand source of single microwave photons has now been developed, with characteristics that may make it suitable for processing quantum information in a circuit of superconducting qubits. This is the first report of a superconducting qubit mapped onto a 'flying qubit', a mobile bit of quantum information that is one of the 'DiVincenzo criteria' for quantum computing.
