Coupling of surface temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentrations during the Palaeozoic era

Abstract

The CO2/temperature link Global warming sceptics were quick to pounce on the disagreement amongst geologists over whether high atmospheric CO2 concentrations were always associated with global warming in the distant geological past. But a new study adds further support to the conventional view that atmospheric CO2 concentrations and Earth surface temperatures have always been closely coupled. Analysis of Palaeozoic ocean temperatures, based on the 'carbonate clumped isotope' palaeothermometer, indicates that when atmospheric CO2 was high compared to modern levels, Earth temperatures were markedly elevated, and when atmospheric CO2 was nearly as low as today, temperatures were similar to today's.
