Abstract

Make a meal of it Civilizations, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tells us, pass through three phases summed up as: How can we eat? Why do we eat? And where shall we have lunch? Not far off, if Martin Jones's new book Feast is anything to go by. Jones detects an important role for the evolution of socialized food preparation and consumption in human society. And his comparison of diners at a University of Cambridge banquet with Jane Goodall's apes raises the question of whether we are really that different from other primates in our food sharing habits.
