Abstract

A good SOCE Store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is a signalling process whereby a decrease in the concentration of Ca2+ in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) triggers Ca2+ influx via channels in the plasma membrane. SOCE has been detected in many types of excitable and non-excitable cells, involved in essential functions such as secretion and immunity. Despite intense interest in SOCE, its molecular basis remained elusive until recently, when genes for the ER Ca2+ sensor and Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channel were identified. A molecular picture of CRAC channel activation and SOCE is now starting to emerge.
