A black hole in a globular cluster

Abstract

A hole in one Theories predict that collisions between some of the many thousands of stars packed into globular clusters should lead to the formation of massive black holes. No such black holes had been observed, so perhaps a rival theory, that stellar jostling would eject most or all black holes from the clusters has it right? The discovery of the X-ray signature of a black hole in a globular cluster associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 in Virgo provides part of the answer, and by studying its properties it should be possible to establish the prospects for other black holes in similar situations.
