In situ structure of the complete Treponema primitia flagellar motor

Abstract

Cracking the Whip The first complete structure of a bacterial flagellar motor shows this quintessential macromolecular nanomachine poised for action. Obtained by electron cryotomography of intact Treponema primitia cells, the structure reveals 16-fold symmetry in the stator part of the flagellum, with multiple connections to the rotor, C ring, and a novel P-ring-like structure.
