Earthquake risk on the Sunda trench

Abstract

Echoes of tsunami disaster The massive earthquake that struck off the west coast of Sumatra on 28 March, causing fears of another tsunami disaster, is confirmed as a rupture of the Sunda megathrust triggered by the December event. The latest maps of stress distribution indicate that the greatest risk of renewed seismicity on the Sunda megathrust is in the section near the Mentawai islands: history suggests that a tsunami is a possibility.
