Excursions in geomagnetism

Abstract

The intensity of Earth's magnetic field varies on timescales varying from seconds to tens of millions of years. Only with palaeomagnetic records going back deep into the past can putative causes for the variations be tested. A new composite analysis of 33 records covers the past 800,000 years: one conclusion to be drawn for it is that it seems unlikely that field intensity has been influenced by variations in Earth's orbit.
