Reversal of Fortune in a Small, Open Economy: Regional GDP in Belgium, 1896-2000

Abstract

Vengono presentate stime del PIL pro capite per alcuni anni nella prima metà del XX secolo, costruite secondo il metodo proposto da Geary e Stark. Verificata la robustezza del metodo per il caso del Belgio, le stime vengono raccordate ai dati ufficiali del prodotto per regioni, a partire dal 1955, così da coprire l'intero secolo. Viene quindi sottoposto a verifica il contrasto sottolineato da molti storici tra le «Fiandre arretrate» e una relativamente «prospera Vallonia» intorno al 1900. L'analisi viene estesa oltre la controversia Fiandre/Vallonia a nove province del Belgio. Emerge un drammatico capovolgimento delle fortune economiche delle province del Nord rispetto alle province del Sud. Ci si chiede infine se nel XX secolo si registrò una convergenza.
